eBituaries FAQ
- Are eBituaries completely free?
Yes, they are completely free. You may write an ebituary of any length and publish up to eight photographs with it. We will keep it in our archive and make it continuously available on our website.
- How do I change or delete an eBituary which I already submitted?
You can't change or delete it, just as you can't change or delete an ordinary obituary after it appears in print. So be careful what you write. Prepare your ebituary in a word processor or other such program before you upload your content to our site. Check your dates and facts. Take advantage of the preview page to review your work carefully, before you press "Submit".
If an ebituary contains false or malicious content, then you can flag it. We may delete it after reviewing the case, but we didn't know the deceased person, and we will not delete his or her ebituary unless it is very obviously false or malicious.
- Can I write an ebituary for someone who already has one at your site?
Yes, but we only allow multiple ebituaries because they are very hard to police. We would prefer one ebituary per person. If an ebituary about someone has already been posted, please write an entry in the guestbook rather than publish another one.
- How do you verify that what contributors say about a person is true?
We do not verify it. The writer gives his name and his city, and you can take it up with them. Most contributors are close relatives or friends of the deceased. If you know something is wrong, you may flag the ebituary and we will review it. We can spot obviously inappropriate content, but in most cases, we can't screen for the truth.
- I would like to post an ebituary, but I am having trouble writing it. Do you have anyone who can help me?
Allow us to refer you to our primer on How to Write an Ebituary. If you are still stuck, we can help, but we charge for that service. For a flat fee of $400, we will give you a phone consultation, write the ebituary (up to 500 words), attach up to 8 photographs which you send us, allow you to proof-read it, and post it to eBituaries. Yes, we know that's expensive (80¢ per word!), but it's much less than you will pay for a comparable length obituary in any major newspaper, and with the newspapers, you still have to write the obituary yourself. For our fee, you will get a nice, maybe even a great ebituary with plenty of photos that you provide. You can contact us for this service at writersblock@ebituaries.org. Include your name, email address and phone number. We will call you back.
